Grates and railings in GRP (Kennedy Railway Tunnel)
The customer
A contract for BESIX which specialises in building, infrastructure and marine works.
Purpose
This collaboration took place as part of the works on the Oosterweel link at Linkeroever in Antwerp. We were responsible for renewing the evacuation path in the Kennedy railway tunnel in case passengers got stuck on a stationary train.
Problem-solution
The former evacuation path (made of concrete) in the railway tunnel was often flooded during heavy rainfall. CGK installed a higher brand new platform made of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) gratings and also provided the railing in GRP.
- The holes in the grate ensure optimal drainage of water.
- GRP is highly resistant to all weather conditions.
- GRP is not painted or treated and requires no maintenance.
- Glass fibre reinforced plastic does not conduct, which is very important in this situation, as there are several electricity cables running under the path.
- The GRP gratings have a quartz coating, which prevents slipping.
