Safety cans
Standard containers used to purchase solvents and other chemicals are designated solely for storage. For the safe transportation, handling, cleaning, and dispensing of chemicals, safety cans and specialized containers are utilized.
Why are safety cans so safe when storing highly flammable products?
In case of fire, the ambient temperature will increase, causing highly flammable liquids to start evaporating. In a closed container (200 litre drum, closed bottle), this will result in an explosion due to overpressure and thus detonation. If such products are stored in plastic packaging, it is possible that the packaging will melt and also cause an explosion.
The safety cans feature a filling opening with flame screen and overpressure protection.
- The overpressure protection ensures that the packaging does not burst or explode in case of overpressure.
- The flame screen ensures the liquid does not ignite when you pour it over or in case of ignition.
If the temperature increases due to fire, sun or direct fire, the vapours that create excess pressure will open the flap or valve and thus vent. As soon as that pressure drops, the valve will close again. The released vapour ignites immediately, but the flame screen prevents explosion. Eventually, in case of fire, the liquid will be completely vaporised before the flames can make direct contact with the liquid.
Advantages of safety cans
Utilizing safety cans significantly lowers the risk of hazards during an initial intervention by employees, facilitates smoother operations for fire brigade interventions, and prevents additional damage from explosions of large quantities of fuel.
