The customer

Waterleau assists municipalities and companies in managing (sewage) water treatment and production facilities.

Purpose

For La Brasimba (a subsidiary of the CASTEL Group and a leader in the brewery sector in French-speaking Africa), Waterleau was looking for a supplier to construct its own BIOTIM off-gas treatment system.

Problem-solution

As part of the brewery's capacity expansion, La Brasimba required a cleaning system (scrubber) to neutralize harmful vapors and odors, particularly the characteristic "rotten egg smell" of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S).

Waterleau provided the design for its BIOTIM® scrubber, and we were responsible for the construction and transportation arrangement. For the further development of the installation, we based our work on Waterleau's P&ID and managed the engineering through to production.

  • In our workshop in Gullegem, we manufactured a two-stage scrubber, biofilter, and collector in HDPE. Due to the high gas volume (1800 Nm³/h), the scrubber is larger than usual.
  • The gas enters through the collector and is then pushed by the fan into the scrubber. A biofilter was installed downstream of the scrubber.

Functionality:

  • Scrubber: Handles the pretreatment of the gas, focusing on removing acidifying components.
  • Biofilter: Facilitates further breakdown of pollutants. In biofiltration, hydrogen sulfide is passed upward through a filter bed made of biological material (in this case, tree bark). The filter material contains a thin water film inhabited by microorganisms. Pollutants in the gas stream are adsorbed and absorbed onto the filter material and then degraded by the microorganisms. The bark is continuously moistened to keep the microorganisms alive.
  • After conducting the necessary leak tests, we also managed the transportation and lifting operations to deliver the installation to the Belgian port.
  • Plug-and-Play System: The components were built and labeled in such a way that Brasimba's staff can easily assemble and connect the installation themselves.
