Sodium hydroxide storage tank plant replacement (Bekaert)

Purpose

Replacing an existing, obsolete plant with a new storage tank plant for dosing sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

Problem-solution

At the Bekaert site in Zwevegem, a lot of process and support infrastructure is running, including steam and chemical dosing plants.

Challenge

• The existing NaOH storage tank was outdated and no longer met the inspection requirements. A new tank installation was required in order to continue dosing sodium hydroxide.
• There was insufficient space available within the existing buildings for a new tank. In addition, the pipeline route ran a long distance towards the indoor installation where the effective dosing takes place, which required extra attention to tracing and insulation.

Solution

• Our team realized a complete turnkey replacement project with a new double-walled PE storage tank of approx. 30 m³, a chemical-resistant filling cabinet and an extensive piping route towards the indoor installation.
• The tank was placed outside within the existing containment and executed in accordance with the applicable VLAREM guidelines.
• All piping outside the encasement was double-walled for extra safety and reliability.
• In addition, the piping was prepared for tracing and insulation to protect the installation from temperature fluctuations and ensure reliable product flow.
• At the tank, our team provided a structure with platform, GRP handrails and stairs. The top of the tank has a non-skid finish for safe access and maintenance.

This project nicely demonstrates how our CGK staff can also complete smaller turnkey projects completely in-house: from plastic structures and piping to assembly and finishing.
