An active gas scrubber with recirculation is suitable for applications with higher or prolonged vapor loads. Unlike a gas scrubber that uses the scrubbing liquid only once, this design collects and reuses the liquid over a specific period. This significantly reduces water and chemical consumption. Measurements, automatic controls, and alarm notifications ensure a stable and controlled scrubbing process.

How does an active gas scrubber with circulation work?

In an active gas scrubber with circulation, the contaminated air enters at the bottom of the gas column. At the top of the system, the scrubbing liquid is distributed over the packing via spray nozzles. The air and liquid move in opposite directions through the column.

The packing creates a large contact surface between the gas stream and the scrubbing liquid. This allows vapors and pollutants to be efficiently absorbed from the air or chemically neutralized.

After passing through the packing, the scrubbing liquid is collected in a reservoir. A circulation pump then returns the liquid to the spray nozzles so that it can be reused multiple times.

Controlled Dosing and Automatic Control

Because the washing liquid is reused, its quality must be closely monitored. The system can therefore be equipped with various measurement and control features, such as:

  • pH or redox control
  • a level sensor in the tank
  • automatic chemical dosing
  • discharge control
  • level monitoring
  • alarm notifications for abnormal values

Based on these measurements, the system can add water or chemicals in a timely manner. When the scrubbing solution becomes saturated or contaminated, a portion can be drained and replaced in a controlled manner.

The gas scrubber can also be connected to a central control system, process control system, or building management system. This allows operational data, alarms, and measurement values to be monitored centrally.

Reduced water and chemical consumption

The main difference from a standard active gas scrubber is that the scrubbing liquid is not drained immediately after a single pass.

By circulating the liquid for a certain period of time:

  • water consumption is reduced
  • chemicals can be dosed more precisely
  • less wastewater is generated
  • the scrubbing process can be monitored more accurately
  • performance remains stable under prolonged loads

For which applications is an active gas scrubber with recirculation suitable?

An active gas scrubber with recirculation is primarily used for:

  • higher vapor flow rates
  • regular loading operations
  • continuous monitoring
  • operation under higher or prolonged loads

Furthermore, the gas scrubber’s operation can be linked to the filling or production process. This ensures that the system is activated only when vapors are actually being released.
