Active Gas Scrubbers
An active gas scrubber is suitable for higher vapor flow rates, regular filling operations, and applications with higher loads. The scrubbing liquid is continuously distributed over the packing, while the contaminated air moves through the column in countercurrent flow. This creates intensive contact between the air and the liquid and allows the scrubbing process to be precisely controlled. Depending on the application, the system operates with water or a specialized scrubbing liquid and can be integrated with the filling process so that it is active only when needed.
In an active gas scrubber, the scrubbing liquid is continuously distributed over the packing. The system offers a larger contact surface and greater control over the scrubbing process than a simple passive design.
This type is suitable for, among other things:
- higher vapor flow rates;
- regular filling operations;
- tank venting with a higher load;
- applications requiring controlled liquid distribution.
The water supply can be linked to the filling process, so that the scrubber is activated only when necessary.
They excel particularly at higher flow rates or with highly odorous products such as 24% ammonia. Active gas scrubbers are suitable for a wide range of acidic, basic, and water-soluble components (HCl, acetic acid, NH₃, HNO₃, HF, or SO₂). The same applies to the scrubbing liquid, ranging from water to bases and acids.
In an active gas scrubber, air enters at the bottom of the column, while spray nozzles at the top atomize the scrubbing liquid. Air and liquid flow countercurrently, thereby scrubbing the contaminated air. The water supply for the scrubbing liquid occurs at two levels: approximately in the middle of the scrubber and near the top. The scrubbing liquid is atomized above the packing in each case.
Active scrubbers also remain entirely atmospheric, reducing the risk of overpressure caused by frozen liquid. After the process, the liquids pass through water treatment or are reused in another process. However, water and cleaning agent consumption is higher than with a passive gas scrubber.
