Replacing main water line Niagara (Bellewaerde)

The customer
Bellewaerde Park is a theme park in the West Flanders countryside near Zonnebeke near Ypres.
Purpose
Replacing the main water line that supplies water to the "Big Splash" Niagara. The attraction is 20 meters high and 240 meters long.
Problem-solution
Every year Bellewaerde Park carries out extensive maintenance work. Our CGK team was deployed to replace pipe work.
To supply the Niagara Splash with water, Bellewaerde draws water from the lake next to the attraction.
- The main water pipe (20 m long) consisted of steel and was preventively replaced by CGK with a PEHD (plastic) pipe and a new custom-made PEHD collector with several branches. Here we used both mirror weldingand wire welding techniques.
- Steel is less weather resistant and over time, the large amount of water flowing into the pipe caused the material to deteriorate (rust). Thus, this could cause leaks. Together with the customer, we researched which product was the best fit for this application. Because PEHD is weatherproof, abrasion-resistant and durable, we concluded that plastic was the best option.
- We calculated the best trajectory so that there is an optimal flow of water and the expansion is accommodated. With future maintenance in mind, the route was also fitted with removable flange couplings.
- In addition to installing the new plastic pipes, we also dismantled the old steel pipes and collector. In addition, we also installed new custom-made supportering.
